Warrant Review 8-9-05 Jacks Waterfront B&G, St. Clair Shores, MI

By "Detroit" Dave Dudek

What do you get when you mix big name band, a smaller venue, attitude, and a playmate of the year? You guessed it! A Warrant concert! On August 9th, Jacks on the Water (http://www.jackswaterfront.com) hosted their 1st Annual “Rock The Waterfront Venetian Fest” with featured artists Warrant. Playboy’s 2005 Playmate of the year, the beautiful Ms. Tiffany Fallon, was present to emcee the show. (FYI – She was Toby Keith’s Video Vixen in ‘Who’s Your Daddy’). Due to local ordinances, Warrant was forced to play an abridged set that ended by 11pm. Erik Turner and the Boys used every moment to rock da house! Starting the set with “Down Boy’s”, Warrant fans immediately knew that Warrant meant business. Revisiting songs that made them famous, and unveiling new material as well, Warrant showed that time only makes things better. Their songs never lose their power. They draw the same emotions that they did back in the hay day, 80’s hair day. Playing fan favorites such as ‘I Saw Red’, and ‘Heaven’ drew the crowd to sing and sway, but the rock never stopped. This is a band that can kick your ass, stomp ya down, and leave ya smiling! Original Warrant “Down Boys” Erik Turner and Joey Allen took off heads with their searing guitar leads and Steven Sweet kept perfect timing on the skins. Jerry Dixon glued it all together and rounded out the original ‘down boys’ with the bass. The most recent addition to the Warrant family is Jaime St. James. Filling the shoes of original member Jani Lane who is pursuing a solo career, Jaime St. James rings in a new, fresh sound that keeps true to the Warrant sound, but also opens doors for a new attitude-rich future that will keep Warrant pushing the envelope creatively. “On Tour” would like to personally thank Erik Turner and the boys for the invite to the show. Check out Warrant at a venue near you. Look to http://warrantweb.net for all the tour details, bio’s, news, and more.

Neil Diamond at ‘The Palace of Auburn Hills’, Michigan by Detroit Dave Dudek

Once in a great while we get to review artists that have personally changed modern music with their contributions.

On Tour was recently invited to review one of the greatest showmen of all time and a living legend, Neil Diamond. At an impressive 64 years young, his 2-hour stage show was upbeat, energetic and had an almost sold out show dancing in their seats. His stage presence demanded respect and his show was of legendary proportion. Dressed in black pants and a black sequined shirt, Neil danced around the 360-degree stage playing the crowd as only a superstar can. The evening started with a dramatic entrance as the band rose from under the stage and Neil appeared above. ‘Crunchy Granola Suite’ opened the show. Spanning songs from over a 40-year career, Neil performed songs from his only starring movie role, ‘The Jazz Singer’, and also played songs from his Grammy winning and Golden Globe winning musical score ‘Jonathan Livingstone Seagull’. With a catalog of hit songs, two hours only touched the surface of contributions that Neil Diamond has produced. Many popular songs were not included in the set, but every song played was a great classic and enjoyed by all. Thank you to Neil and his management team for inviting us to the show. Rock on!

Live Tom Petty Review 7-20-05 DTE Music Center
    By "Detroit" Dave Dudek

Tom Petty Review 7-20-05 DTE Music Center A sold out show of all ages flocked to Clarkston, MI to witness Tom Petty and his Heartbreaker band take a time capsule back to the 80’s. Not a single person was disappointed. The DTE venue has to be the finest place to attend a concert. The beautiful landscaping surrounding the outdoor stage and pavilion is second to none. The acoustics of this marvelous venue once known as Pine Knob (a.k.a. - ‘The Knob’) shine above all other venues. Tom Petty took the stage following a bluesy, rocking set from the reunited Robinson Brothers and their Black Crowes. The night was all Petty. No big stage show, just a band and their music. The generation gap was filled for that moment when adults and children alike were singing in unison to the timeless Tom Petty songs. It was awe-inspiring. Tom Petty pranced around stage rousing the screaming fans and pleasing all with hit after hit. Petty started the show with a flawlessly tight sounding “Listen to her Heart”. Then the fragrant aroma of the 70’s was very evident as he broke into “You Don’t Know How It Feels”. Every song was a masterpiece perfected by a veteran musician. Rain was threatening the lawn seat fans, but no person was interested in anything but the music. The sound was pure, the stage show, modest, the songs, classic, and the night unforgettable. We would like to thank Tom Petty and his management group for inviting ‘On Tour’ to the show. Rock On!!

  • Tom Petty – Guitar, Harmonica, Vocals
  • Mike Campbell – Guitar
  • Behmont Tench – Keyboards
  • Steve Ferrone – Drums

Live The Van Zant's "Get Right With The Man"; A spiritual revival
    By "Detroit" Dave Dudek

From the first name in southern rock, Van Zant’s “Get Right With The Man” CD kicks ass and asks for no apology. The true, upfront and in your face rock and country blend together with a cataclysmic fury that you would expect from these southern rock veterans from Jacksonville, Fl. With each compilation on the disc, you can feel the heat from the swamp, the revelations from the church pews, and the aftermath of a life of hard living. Having lived each experience individually and together as family, Van Zant has every right to sing each song honestly and with true feelings. “Takin’ Up Space” opens the journey. Hard to the core, and to the point, it rocks like only a Florida youth anthem should. “Nobody’s Gonna Tell Me What To Do” follows with a fresh country sound that will surely follow in the radio success that “Help Somebody” has. My personal favorite on the CD has to be the song “Things I Miss The Most”. The harmony between Johnny (Lynryd Skynyrd) and Donnie (38 Special) Van Zant and the passion behind the lyrics give a genuine feeling for what it’s like to be away from home on tour. The contemporary country song “I Can’t Help Myself” cries to the spiritual revival of everyone who has followed the Van Zant story through the years. There are CD’s that tell a story and CD’s that tell ‘the’ story. This is one of ‘those’ CD’s. The story told is a story of endurance; a story of redemption. Two brothers who through it all, have remained true to family and friends, the man above, and their music. They offer no apology and have no reason to.

They sing songs about life and love. They have offered us an intimate look into their souls and lifestyles and left us words to live by. “If you can’t lead, let me by you. And if you can’t follow get outta the way, you’re just takin’ up space.”
