Live The Van Zant's "Get Right With The Man"; A spiritual revival
By "Detroit" Dave Dudek

From the first name in southern rock, Van Zant’s “Get Right With The Man” CD kicks ass and asks for no apology. The true, upfront and in your face rock and country blend together with a cataclysmic fury that you would expect from these southern rock veterans from Jacksonville, Fl. With each compilation on the disc, you can feel the heat from the swamp, the revelations from the church pews, and the aftermath of a life of hard living. Having lived each experience individually and together as family, Van Zant has every right to sing each song honestly and with true feelings. “Takin’ Up Space” opens the journey. Hard to the core, and to the point, it rocks like only a Florida youth anthem should. “Nobody’s Gonna Tell Me What To Do” follows with a fresh country sound that will surely follow in the radio success that “Help Somebody” has. My personal favorite on the CD has to be the song “Things I Miss The Most”. The harmony between Johnny (Lynryd Skynyrd) and Donnie (38 Special) Van Zant and the passion behind the lyrics give a genuine feeling for what it’s like to be away from home on tour. The contemporary country song “I Can’t Help Myself” cries to the spiritual revival of everyone who has followed the Van Zant story through the years. There are CD’s that tell a story and CD’s that tell ‘the’ story. This is one of ‘those’ CD’s. The story told is a story of endurance; a story of redemption. Two brothers who through it all, have remained true to family and friends, the man above, and their music. They offer no apology and have no reason to.

They sing songs about life and love. They have offered us an intimate look into their souls and lifestyles and left us words to live by. “If you can’t lead, let me by you. And if you can’t follow get outta the way, you’re just takin’ up space.”
